Who We Are

April 18, 2012 //  by gsoup

Grandma’s Soup is a not-for-profit food service organization that provides meals to individuals and families affected by life-threatening illness.  By taking a holistic approach to nutrition and healing, our mission is to create “Healthy Bodies, One Meal at a Time”.

The philosophy of holistic nutrition focuses on proper nutrition as the basis for optimum health and well being. Our methodology concentrates on life-threatening illness and chronic health conditions by incorporating natural and organic foods into daily nutrition to provide the essential nutrients the body needs during its battle against disease.

Life-threatening illness affects individuals and families at alarming rates. When a diagnosis of a life-threatening illness is given, nutrition is often the first thing to fall by the wayside.  Studies show that nearly 33{83319b28ffaf758a19fca1a94636613a1f6b78d822483999ade938b4d848ab9d} of life-threatening illness can be prevented simply by changing what we eat.   Grandma’s Soup’s goal is to make a stressful time less stressful by taking the guess work out of proper nutrition during times of sickness.

Clients of Grandma’s Soup will receive two nutritious meals per day, seven days a week, for up to three months.  If meals are needed for a period longer than the initial three months, Grandma’s Soup will continue to provide meals to the client based on medical necessity.  Meals are available for delivery or pick-up.  In addition to providing meals, Grandma’s Soup will also offer hands on cooking classes to children and adults.  Our hands on cooking classes teach the skills and techniques needed to prepare delicious, healthy, holistic meals at home.  Cooking classes are available to our clients and to the general public.

Grandma’s Soup is funded through public and private donations, community support, and local and national business partnerships.  The price point for meals and cooking classes is based on current market value.  Our services are available to individuals and families regardless of their ability to pay.

We are conveniently located between two hospitals in a high-traffic, family-friendly business district in the heart of the Evanston community; making us accessible for patrons and clients in Evanston and neighboring communities.  Our products and services are in high demand, putting Grandma’s Soup at the forefront of the evolving eating habits of today’s society.  We are providing the foundation for “Healthy Bodies, One Meal at a Time”.

Besides, what makes you feel better when you get sick?

Frequently Asked Questions

April 18, 2012 //  by gsoup

1. What is holistic nutrition?
Holistic nutrition provides balance by focusing on proper nutrition as the basis for optimum health and well being.

2. How can eating a holistic diet help me?
Good health begins with good foundation. Food is the foundation for life. By consuming natural, organic foods, the body can readily recognize the nutrient intake and provide the body with the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs to fight disease and maintain healthy composure. Toxins such as food additives, preservatives, dies and foreign substances won’t get stuck and clog the filtration systems of our body. Eating holistically means less disease, more energy, long life.

3. Who qualifies for our services?
Grandma’s Soup provides food to individuals and families who live in the Evanston, Skokie & Wilmette communities who are in crisis due to chronic disease or life-threatening illness such as cancer. We also provide meals to those individuals suffering from a short term illness such as surgery and to those who just want to eat healthy.

However, we give priority to clients who are medically challenged, economically disadvantaged, to those with children, to people living alone without any support and to those who don’t qualify for any other meal program such as Meals on Wheels or Meals at Home.

Simply complete our online client intake application and wait to be contacted. Please provide the most current information as you complete the application as this gives us the opportunity to create a meal plan that will be supportive to your healing and prepared to fit your consumption needs.

4. How long can I receive the service?
Our clients are eligible to receive meals for three months (12 weeks) regardless of their ability to pay. At the end of your first three months, we will meet with you evaluate your situation. If needed, we will extend the services based on the need of the client.

5. How do you determine what meal I get?
We deal with a wide range of dietary needs including but not limited to: gluten & wheat free, no dairy, poultry/seafood, no red meat, food allergies, no soy, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and much more. When you complete the client intake application, a client Relations Liaison will contact you to schedule an in-person consultation to discuss your meal plan based on the information that you provided in your application.

6. How will I get my meals?
Meals are available for pick-up or delivery. Once clients have completed the intake process and agreed to the terms of their contract, a meal delivery or pick-up schedule will be created. Meals will be delivered based on the terms of the agreement. If a change needs to be made, please contact us.

7. How many meals will I get?
We prepare complete balanced meals using freshest, most natural organic farm to table products. Each meal consists of an entrée, side, vegetable and or fruit and dessert based on the dietary need of the client.

Each client will receive two meals a day (lunch and dinner) for a total of 14 meals a week. If we are providing meals to the client and their family, we will prepare and provide enough food for the entire family. So, if there are four people in the family, we will provide enough food for four people. Meals may also include any supplemental foods that are ordered such as immune broth, mixed greens and vegetables or gluten and wheat free products.

8. How much do meals cost?
We provide meals to individuals and families in medical crisis regardless of their ability to pay. Our meals are customized to fit each client’s dietary needs. We use the freshest of ingredients and all meals are made from scratch. Customized individual meal plans start at $10.75 per meal. Customized family meal plans start at $19.50 per meal and is based on family size.

9. What if I don’t have any medical dietary restrictions, how can I get meals?
Complete the client intake application and let the process begin. Upon being contacted by our Client Relations Liaison, you will be brought in for an in-person consultation and we will devise a meal plan based on your desired goals. At this time you will be set up with a meal plan and delivery or pick-up schedule.
